Winter Warming Dishes: Soothe Your Soul and Heat Up Your Kitchen
Estimated read: 2 minutes
When the temperatures drop and the days grow a little bit shorter, there's nothing quite like a comforting, hearty meal to make everything feel just a bit warmer. We’re certainly in Autumn and the Winter season will be upon us before we know it. This is the season for slow cooked stews, creamy soups and oven-baked dishes that fill your home with irresistible aromas.
We asked the Robinson’s Catering team what their go to Winter warming dishes were and the results showed a mixture of responses. The number one was a comforting stew, hotpot or casserole, followed closely by a cosy roast dinner and a classic sausages and mash.
Whether you're craving something rich and indulgent or wholesome and nourishing, these winter warming dishes will help you beat the chill.
Classic Beef Chasseur
A timeless winter favourite, beef chasseur is the ultimate cold-weather comfort food. Tender chunks of beef simmered with mushrooms, shallots, tomatoes and herbs. It’s a one pot wonder that gets better with time. Make a big batch and enjoy it for days! Add a splash of red wine for extra depth of flavour.
Creamy Roasted Butternut Squash Soup
Smooth, slightly sweet and perfectly velvety, this soup is winter in a bowl (and perfect for this month). Roasting the squash beforehand caramelises its natural sugars, giving the soup a rich flavour. Finish with a swirl of cream or coconut milk and a sprinkle of roasted seeds for crunch.
Serve with crusty bread or grilled cheese for the ultimate combo.
Baked Mac and Cheese
Level up your mac and cheese with a blend of gourmet cheeses. Think Gruyère, aged cheddar, and fontina and a crunchy, herbed breadcrumb topping. For added warmth and nutrition, stir in roasted cauliflower, sautéed mushrooms, or even a bit of smoked paprika.
Chicken Curry with Coconut Milk
A warming bowl of curry can make even the coldest nights feel tropical. This creamy coconut milk-based chicken curry is full of warming spices like turmeric, ginger and cumin. It’s hearty without being heavy and best served over steaming jasmine rice.
Shepherd’s (or Cottage) Pie
Layers of savoury meat and vegetables beneath a golden mashed potato crust. A shepherd’s (made with lamb) or cottage (made with beef) pie is comfort food royalty. It’s easy to customise with ground beef, lamb, or lentils and it freezes beautifully, making it a great make-ahead meal.
Spiced Apple Crumble
Winter dishes aren’t just about savoury comfort, don’t forget about the dessert! A warm apple crumble spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard, is a nostalgic way to end any winter meal.
Cooking these warming dishes not only brings heat to your kitchen but also offers a kind of nourishment that goes beyond calories. It’s about comfort, connection and care. So grab your coziest sweater, light a candle and enjoy the flavours of the season.
