Hydration: Improves Your Productivity in the Workplace
Estimated read: 2 minutes

We’ve all welcomed the warmer weather we’ve been experiencing recently. Although along with the sunshine and the heat, it also brings to the forefront of our minds, hydration. Whether you're hustling through meetings, glued to your computer, or on your feet all day, staying hydrated at work is often overlooked. However, it is essential for staying sharp, energised and productive. Even a slight dehydration can impact your focus, mood and efficiency. Fortunately, staying hydrated at work is simple, once you make it a habit.

Here's why hydration at work is important:

Boosts Brain Function – did you know that water fuels your brain? Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, reduced concentration and brain fog, which is not ideal for making important decisions or powering through a big project.

Prevents the Afternoon Slump - that dreaded post lunch crash might not just be from that delicious staff lunch you’ve eaten (perhaps try one of our buffet lunches), or a lack of caffeine or sleep. Dehydration is a hidden culprit behind low energy levels. Keeping your body well hydrated helps to maintain steady energy throughout the day.

Improves Mood and Reduces Stress - dehydration can increase feelings of irritability and anxiety. Therefore staying hydrated supports a more balanced mood and helps you handle stress better, which is something every workplace could use a little more of!

Reduces Eye Strain and Dryness - if you’re sat (or stood) staring at a screen all day, you’re probably blinking less, which can naturally dry out your eyes. Proper hydration helps to support eye moisture and reduces screen-induced discomfort.

Saying all of this, it is really easy to stay hydrated at work though, here’s some tips:

Start Your Day with a Glass of Water - begin your morning with water instead of (or in addition to) your morning coffee. It will jump start your metabolism and rehydrate you after a night of sleep.

Keep a Refillable Water Bottle on Your Desk - having a visible water bottle is a simple reminder to drink more. Get one which counts down your water consumption or if it’s a smaller bottle, aim to refill it 2–3 times during your workday.

Use a Water Tracking App or Set Reminders - if you often forget to drink, use hydration tracking apps or set hourly reminders to take a few sips.

Add Some Flavour – infuse your wated with lemon, cucumber, mint or berries to keep things interesting and refreshing and less boring.

Snack Smart - eat water-rich snacks; fruits like watermelon, oranges, grapes or vegetables like cucumbers and celery during breaks.

Limit Dehydrating Drinks - coffee, energy drinks and sodas can really dehydrate you if they are consumed in excess. Balance every cup of caffeine you drink with an extra glass of water.

Working from home can blur routines. Keep a pitcher or large bottle of water on your desk and create hydration checkpoints throughout the day. These could be after meetings, before lunch and mid-afternoon. You’ll feel better, think clearer and even sleep better when you stay on top of your water intake.

Hydration is a small habit that makes a big difference. It supports your mind, body and overall performance. Whether you are leading meetings or replying to emails. Make staying hydrated part of your daily work routine and you’ll feel the benefits both at your desk and beyond.
